We are here to help residents of Central Bedfordshire to find the best free advice on a wide range of topics

Housing and disability intersect in ways that most people never have to think about. Steps that seem minor to others — a staircase, a narrow bathroom doorway, a shower that can't be adapted — can make everyday life genuinely difficult or dangerous. And when you add the complexity of the system — grant applications, council waiting lists, landlord disputes, benefits entitlements — it can feel completely overwhelming.
Many disabled people also don't realise that there is financial and practical support available to help them adapt their homes or access more suitable housing. That's where our advisors come in.
A Disabled Facilities Grant is a government grant available to disabled people of all ages — including children — to help fund adaptations to your home so you can live more safely and independently. It can cover a wide range of adaptations, including:
Widening doors for wheelchair access
Installing ramps or stairlifts
Adapting bathrooms, including level-access showers and accessible toilets
Improving heating systems
Making it easier to get in and out of your home
The grant can be worth up to £30,000 in England, and is means-tested for adults (though not for children). The application process can be complex, and many people are put off by the paperwork or don't know where to start. Our advisors can help you understand whether you're eligible, what the process involves, and how to give your application the best chance of success.
If your disability or health condition affects your ability to work, you may be entitled to Housing Benefit or the housing element of Universal Credit to help cover your rent. Our advisors can help you understand what you might be entitled to, check whether you're receiving the right amount, and assist you if you need to make or update a claim.
If your current home can't meet your needs even with adaptations, you may need to look at moving to more suitable accommodation. Our team can help you understand your options — including council housing, housing association properties, and specialist accessible housing — and advise you on how to apply and what priority you might receive given your circumstances.
Whether you rent privately or from a social landlord, you have rights. Under the Equality Act 2010, landlords are required to make reasonable adjustments for disabled tenants. If your landlord is refusing to allow adaptations, failing to maintain your property, or you feel you're being treated unfairly because of your disability, our advisors can help you understand your rights and what steps you can take.
Even if your situation doesn't fit neatly into one of the above categories, we're still here to help. Our advisors can point you in the right direction for a wide range of housing issues — from planning permission for home extensions to support with navigating your local council's housing department.
Housing systems are complicated at the best of times. When you're also managing a disability or long-term health condition, having someone in your corner who understands both the system and your situation makes an enormous difference.
Our advisors are experienced, patient, and genuinely committed to helping you find the best path forward. We don't just point you at a website — we sit with you, listen to your specific situation, and work out what the most practical next step is for you.
